Word Ransom (wordransom.com) is a free browser word game. This page explains, in plain language, what information the site handles. The short version: there are no accounts, we collect no names or email addresses, puzzles live inside the links people share rather than on our servers, and your game history is stored in your own browser.
When someone builds a puzzle, the secret word (or words), guess counts, optional hint, and optional first name are encoded directly into the share link. The puzzle travels inside that link. We do not store puzzle content on a server, cannot read it, and cannot delete it — whoever holds the link holds the puzzle. Don't put anything in a puzzle, hint, or name field that you wouldn't want the link's recipients to see.
Your browser's local storage keeps: the puzzles you've built (so your "Your puzzles" list works), which puzzles you've already attempted (so replays don't count twice), and your win-loss record against the names of people who sent you puzzles. This data stays on your device, is not linked to your identity, and is deleted if you clear your browser data.
When the site's statistics feature is active, finishing a puzzle sends an anonymous result to our server: a puzzle identifier, whether it was solved, and the solve time. This powers attempt counts and solve rates shown on puzzles. It contains no account, no name, and no puzzle content. Statistics for puzzles inactive for 60 days are deleted. Like most websites, our hosting provider (Cloudflare) may process standard technical information such as IP addresses in server logs for security and to operate the service.
Words, hints, and names are checked against a decency filter before a link is created. The filter is automated and imperfect. Puzzle content is created by users, not by us; if a link someone sent you contains something objectionable, the responsibility is theirs, and we'd encourage you to take it up with whoever claims to be your friend.
